The brief was to build a “fitting together combination” of at least 3 basic blocks (a donut, cube, and cylinder within a volume of 10cm x 10cm x 5cm.
Being taught sewing, wood turning, casting, and plastic working, this assignment allows the freedom to choose 3 of these techniques to make basic shapes. The goal is to master new prototyping skills as well as basic CMF design.
The making process of my blocks include: experimenting with different type of woods for wood turning, 3D modelling and printing, silicone mould making, plaster casting, and plastic bending experiments.
These are the final result with an extra block (donut of different size) included.
The main piece of this project is the donut, two of them with an extra piece that I made. With the colour palette that I made during CMF brainstorming phase, the concept was to combine matte/transparent resin piece and clean/textured plaster piece. As you can see the clean plaster piece goes with the transparent resin while the textured plaster piece goes with the matte resin. From there, the plastic piece made out of plexi-glass follows the matte/transparent combination and the wood was made with simple finishing and shape to suit the overall look.
